An Honest Review

So...if you’ve ever gone to school with me, you know that I’m a pretty good student.

I learn what is necessary, take the test, achieve the score, and then promptly drop the answers from my brain in order to make room for the next round of information needed to get that highly coveted title of High Honors.

Memorizing information has never been a problem for me, but what I’ve learned through the years is that my knowledge isn’t actually that useful unless I follow through with integrating and implementing what I’ve learned.

This is less important when it comes to advanced math equations that I will personally never use again, but absolutely essential when it comes to self-development work (which is one of the 5 Wellness Rituals getting me through the pandemic).

I carried this self-awareness with me as I began my 35-day journey through my selected Mindvalley personal growth program (or “Quest”), Rapid Transformational Hypnotherapy for Abundance, in an effort to reprogram my beliefs and change my habits. It just so happens these themes feature prominently throughout the course, so I knew I had come to the right place.

What is Mindvalley?

If you haven’t checked out Mindvalley’s library of transformational programs yet, I suggest giving them a look. This company provides the type of information I wish I had access to growing up.

I believe we’re long overdue for a shakeup in traditional education as all students, and society as a whole, would benefit from the addition of wellness resources and holistic life skills to the curriculum. Companies like Mindvalley address what is missing, bringing in some of the world’s top teachers to lead the charge.

“We spend the prime years of our lives preparing for our careers. But we spend hardly any time preparing for things that will determine the quality of our life experience and the quality of our relationships, health, mindset and wellbeing. Mindvalley teaches you the things that actually matter most in life.”

- Mindvalley About Page

The roster of teachers is impressive (including long-time favorite of mine, Lisa Nichols) and the programs offer support in a wide variety of topics, including mind, body, soul, parenting and entrepreneurship.

What is Rapid Transformational Hypnotherapy for Abundance?

For my first Quest, I selected Rapid Transformational Hypnotherapy for Abundance as I had heard rumblings of Marisa Peer’s work through blogs and podcasts in the self-development world, and I must say, I was intrigued.

Marisa was voted as UK’s top therapist by Tatler Magazine, and has spent a quarter of a century coaching satisfied clients, including celebrities, CEOs of multi-billion dollar companies, Olympic athletes, and over 100,000 students on the Mindvalley platform.

She has also been the recipient of criticism from more traditional therapists for her signature methods, claiming it isn’t possible for major change to happen instantaneously. This was something I was also skeptical about, however her long list of testimonials to the contrary made me want to try it out anyway and see for myself.

Marisa’s main modality, Rapid Transformational Hypnotherapy (described as a Neuroscientific Technique), was created to help you “rise above the internal blocks holding you back from the abundance you deserve,” and features prominently during the program.

The Quest itself takes 35 days, and the daily lessons take roughly 20-40 minutes a day. Each week, you focus on a specific subject (Limiting Beliefs, Abundance, Health, Wealth, Relationships) and at the end of the week you receive an RTT session on the topic, which includes both a Regression and a Rewiring. The Rewiring sessions are meant to be listened to daily for a minimum of 21 consecutive days.

The Work

The attractive and easy to navigate platform provides daily lessons in both video and audio formats, and includes an accompanying workbook to help you keep track of your progress and insights.

You will be asked to reflect on the day’s lesson in this workbook, and you can either print it out, write in your journal, or update the editable PDF provided for you. You also have access to a community of other students who are experiencing this journey at the same time.

My Experience

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen Westworld, but I wanted to take this course in order to break my “loop”, or predetermined path in life that I could potentially be stuck in forever, never stretching beyond my boundaries to reach my greatest potential.

I wanted to understand why I held the beliefs that were holding me back, and I was looking to heal them and replace them with belief in endless possibilities.

The Neuroplasticity focus of this course was most intriguing to me as a tactic to approach my limiting beliefs. Per Marisa, “Neuroplasticity means that the brain can change. When we change our thinking, the brain rewires itself and our actions change too.”

I was ready. My brain was ready. I dove in.

What Worked For Me

As I mentioned, I was pretty good at school. What I didn’t mention is that I really, really love learning (especially when it comes to subjects that excite me) and this Quest was very interesting and right up my alley. Here are a few of my favorite things:

  • The Platform - No matter what kind of learner you are, this program provides many tools for success. We all absorb information differently, so giving options on how to consume the material, and reinforcing the information from different angles, really makes the experience feel customized. The workbook, the choice between video or audio lessons, and the community provide various types of learners with a very well-rounded experience.

  • Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) Regressions - Some deeply felt but long-forgotten memories came to the surface during my regressions. I still held pain from those memories, and this time spent with myself allowed me to address it, understand how it was contributing to my current beliefs, and decide to let it go. These sessions provided emotional releases that I didn’t even know I needed. I thought back to that younger me who didn’t know better and sent her the love and support she needed at the time. This was quite healing for me.

  • RTT Rewiring Sessions - Hypnotherapy has always been an interest of mine, so I was totally up for training my brain in this way. I do believe the repetition of these positive suggestions allowed them to truly start to sink in and replace thoughts that had been previously holding me back.

  • Small Wins - The bite-sized acts of completion every day gave me a sense of accomplishment and helped keep me motivated. There is a lot of material in this course, but having short, specific tasks to complete, and a check-mark to select once completed, was satisfying to me. I felt the lessons offered daily were substantial enough to really dive into, but weren’t too overwhelming.

  • Practical Advice - I appreciated the great reminders sprinkled throughout the course about how to handle life’s challenges, especially when it has to do with how other people perceive us, and the degree to which we let that information in.

    • “People who are critical usually have the most criticism reserved for themselves,” and “Part of loving yourself is self-acceptance. Accept good and not so good things about yourself and then change what you can” are two such examples.

  • Lifetime Access - This is a huge plus. These RTT sessions have become a part of my nightly ritual and I’m glad to have continued access to them.

What Didn’t Work for Me

No program is perfect, and everyone has things they will not resonate with, even if they worked well for everyone else. Here are a few of my thoughts:

  • Community (Referred to as “Tribes”) - For many, the support of a community during this process is deeply nourishing and motivating. I, however, mostly avoided the group setting as these realizations were deeply personal for me, and not something I felt comfortable sharing with strangers. Additionally:

    • As an empath I found it hard to separate myself from the emotions of others. My natural instinct is to jump in and help everyone else, which would have been counter-intuitive for me as this journey was meant to be an act of self-care and quality time spent with myself.

    • The use of the term “Tribe” to describe supportive communities has been rethought recently by prominent brands for being culturally insensitive, particularly to indigenous populations. I would like to see Mindvalley address this.

  • Mindset Isn’t Everything - Is a shift in our beliefs the only thing necessary to unlock the lives of our dreams? Although it is important, I believe there are other things we must consider. I’d like to see more self-development programs as a whole address underlying systemic inequities in marginalized communities, and how mindset work relates in this regard. If physiological basic needs in Maslow's hierarchy of needs aren't being met, limited personal resources will have to be directed towards survival and are therefore not available for mindset training.

Overall, there are many wonderful benefits to taking this course and I’m really glad I did. If you do decide to dive in, make sure you are willing to make the following commitments in order to get the best results:

  • Time - This course was definitely worth the time I put into it. It is essential that you devote 20-40 minutes of undivided attention to the course work and follow through with the RTT sessions daily. I had a couple of emergency situations show up during the last 35 days, resulting in a few missed consecutive lessons, and I found that catching up was difficult. I felt I didn’t get as much out of those couple of sessions because I was too focused on trying to stay on track with the class.

    • My recommendation would be that if this happens, come back one day at a time - it’s OK if you fall behind the class. What matters is that you get the most out of each lesson, really taking in the information and answering the daily prompts.

  • Money - $349 for lifetime digital access isn’t a small amount, but it is a fraction of what you would pay for one-on-one sessions with Marisa Peer. If you are going to invest in your self-development, make sure you understand the reasons why you are doing it and hold yourself accountable for showing up fully.

    • Often we put more effort into the things we mindfully invest in since we see them as having more value than say, a free course. This investment could be a turning point for you so only take this Quest if you’re prepared for some potentially major shifts.

I do appreciate how Mindvalley offers many free courses and master classes, so if you aren’t sure what direction you’d like to go, start there. You can take a free master class with Marisa Peer and experience a Rapid Transformational Therapy Session for yourself.

Final Thoughts

The final segment in the course provided an exit survey, one that measured several aspects of  where I began the 35 days compared to where I ended up. I was able to confidently select “Greater Productivity, Increased Confidence and Greater Self-Love” as improvements over this time, which I definitely see as a win.

I gained some very valuable and surprising insights about my limiting beliefs, healed previous injuries from memories I had long forgotten (but whose impact stayed with me) and became much more aware of the blocks that show up in day to day life. This awareness allows me to recognize limiting my behavior in real time, and choose a better, more empowering thought instead.

Although these changes were more gradual and not exactly rapid for me, I do see this work transforming my life. I suspect the time and effort invested in this course has accelerated the process at the very least and set the groundwork for long-lasting change.

I’ve done a lot of self-development work in my life, and although none of it produced instantaneous results, I experienced many sizable shifts that changed my life for the better. I feel I’ve only scratched the surface compared to how deep I can go with this work, so I plan to revisit the material, continually integrating and implementing it to unlock its many gifts.

Live Your Best Light

Although personal transformation can happen in an instant, a consistent practice of self-awareness and dedication to growth is also an acceptable path.

Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t happen as quickly as you expect. You can’t force a flower to bloom, or a fruit to ripen. Trust in your own unique timing!
